The Building Blocks of Risk Management: Be Visible or Stay In the Dark

21 Nov 2019, 09:35 - 09:55

Innovation Stage

Innovation Session

The need for risk management has grown dramatically over the past couple of decades.  Companies are embracing technology like they never have before.  Digital processes include on premise, cloud, third party, and hybrid technologies forcing data to be consumed and processes executed in a myriad of ways by a myriad of actors.  These technologies and special process capabilities – when working properly – create speed, value and provide insights like never before…but the risk of hiccups to failures grows every day and the impacts can be severe.

These new ways have increased the exposure of data, increased the surface area for attacks not only within organizations but throughout the supply and value chain.  New standards, and laws have evolved to protect customers and third parties.  These obligations have created process, reporting and compliance risks for organizations.

Many of the issues of risk management stem from not knowing how to take a consistent approach to managing risk.  It's not your fault.  This topic is rarely taught in school and many people who are asked to think about risk have a hard time understanding and defining what risk is and how risk impacts the organization.

We will share an approach to risk management that helps companies of all sizes and maturities get their risk management programs or approaches started, advanced, and be flexible enough to grow as their organization and the regulatory, business, and technology environments change.  We will talk about the building blocks used to identify, measure and communicate risk.  We will learn how these building blocks can be leveraged by the entire business.

Purposefully managing risk for organizations is often a journey.  We will talk about ways successful organizations have used the building blocks, measurement and messaging techniques to grow the capabilities and mature risk in their organization.

After completing this session you will be able to

  • Understand how to start, scale or mature a risk management program
  • Understand how to communicate risk to different audiences
  • Understand how to integrate risk to provide more value to the organization
